Market Watch: who is rising, who is being sold, and what it costs to be late

Neto is under the heaviest buying pressure in the game and Scott is being sold hardest. Where the transfer market is heading before the prices catch up.

How prices actually move

A player's price rises when enough managers buy him relative to how many already own him. That last clause is what most price-watch coverage misses: a player owned by 300,000 managers needs a fraction of the buys that a player owned by four million does. Raw transfer counts therefore mislead in both directions, and the useful figure is net transfers divided by the existing ownership base.

Neto leads on pressure: 3,077 net transfers in against an ownership base of roughly 155,517 managers. Buying before a rise is worth a tenth of a million, which is trivial on any single transfer and compounds into real squad value across a season.

Scott is the heaviest sell. A falling price is only a problem if you intend to sell him: the loss is realised at the point of transfer, not at the point of the drop, and panicking into a fall usually costs more than the fall did.

Squad value risk

Squad value is not a scoreboard. It is a constraint that decides which squads you can build later in the season, and it leaks quietly rather than dramatically. The mechanism is worth stating precisely, because it is where most of the confusion lives.

When a player's price falls by a tenth, you lose a tenth of squad value immediately. When it rises by a tenth, you only bank half of the rise — FPL charges 50% sell-on tax, rounded down. So a player bought at £7.0m who climbs to £7.4m sells for £7.2m, not £7.4m. The asymmetry means falls cost you more than rises earn you, and it is why avoiding falls beats chasing rises as a strategy.

The four rules that actually matter

  • Never make a transfer to catch a price rise. A tenth of a million is worth roughly nothing; a wasted transfer is worth four points.
  • Never hold a player you have decided to sell. The fall is already priced in by the time you notice it, and waiting only deepens it.
  • Buy early in the week when you are confident, late when you are not. Information arrives across the week — press conferences, training reports. Trading a tenth for a team-news update is a good trade.
  • Ignore value entirely until the second half of the season. It is a constraint that binds late, not a score that runs throughout.
BUY: Neto (£6.5m)3,077 net transfers in. If you want him, the cheap window is now.
WATCH: Henderson (£4.9m)1,234 net in and climbing.
SELL: Scott (£6.0m)-2,769 net out. Only act if you were selling anyway — do not sell a player to save a tenth.
