Three things it does that raw stats do not

A player who does not start scores nothing, so every projection is scaled by how likely he is to play and for how long. It is the difference between a good player and a good pick.
Fixtures, both ways
Every opponent is rated for what they concede and what they create, home and away kept separate — a run of green is a number, not a colour.
Small samples are distrusted
Two goals on the opening day does not make a two-goal-a-game striker. Every rate is pulled toward a sensible prior until the sample earns its way out.
